Improving mental health and education for children living in Ukraine
Program overview
OutcomesX is executing an initial trade of social outcomes between buyer UBS Optimus Foundation and more than 20 Ukrainian nonprofit organizations to support children’s education and mental health outcomes in Ukraine. The OutcomesX marketplace enables funders to purchase verified outcomes from vetted Ukrainian organizations using an impact registry that validates the rigor, relevance and efficacy of interventions used by local nonprofits working in the local language.
The plight of children in Ukraine
The war in Ukraine is highly impacting the most vulnerable population—children, putting at risk both their education and mental health in ways that could affect their lives and country for decades to come.
Almost one-quarter of all children in Ukraine have been exposed to bombs and shelling. World Vision reports that without swift intervention, psychological scars could affect children well into adulthood, crippling their success in life and the country’s next-generation workforce. Meanwhile, school disruptions and learning loss will reduce their lifetime earnings.
While at least 1.8 million children have fled to other countries, three quarters remain in Ukraine, about a third internally displaced. Humanitarian assistance has been generous, but it flows almost entirely to large, international organizations, which mainly support refugees outside Ukraine. Channeling support to victims of war inside Ukraine has been difficult.
How OutcomesX and UBS Optimus Foundation are working together to reach the most vulnerable
UBS Optimus Foundation recognized this gap in funding Ukrainian nonprofits and worked with OutcomesX to identify local organizations having the greatest impact on children and internally displaced persons in their communities. OutcomesX identified more than 100 local organizations making a difference, and recruited 63 of them to register their impact. UBS selected a portfolio of more than 20 of those registered that could maximize impact across students and geographies. The portfolio is on track to deliver almost 16,000 outcomes for children, 650 outcomes for teachers, and build the capacity of an additional 32 organizations and institutions to deliver education and mental health related services.
